Chimney Sweep · from $169

Before the first cold night. Creosote, cap, damper, flue.

A real chimney sweep is a sweep and a safety inspection — not one or the other. We clear the creosote, check the cap and damper, camera-scope the flue liner, and give you one clean report before you light the first fire of the season.

Every Visit

What a real sweep actually covers.

"Chimney sweep" means different things at different companies. At Cal Duct, a single visit covers everything your fireplace needs before burning season — sweep, safety check, and a written CSIA-style inspection. One visit, one flat price.

If we find something that needs repair — a cracked flue tile, a damaged cap, a broken damper — you get photos, a written finding, and a no-obligation quote. We're never incentivized to find problems that aren't there.

description

Written safety report

A dated, photographed Level-1 inspection report — useful for insurance, resale disclosures, and your peace of mind.

The Process

Top-down sweep, fully contained, no mess on your hearth.

Our standard sweep is a Level 1 visual inspection — fireplace, firebox, smoke shelf, damper, and visible flue. Rooftop work is reserved for cases that specifically need it; most homes don't. If a camera scope of concealed flue areas is needed, that's our Level 2 service.

01

Fireplace sealed with drop cloths

Living room and hearth protected. Shoe covers on from the front door.

02

Commercial vacuum at the firebox

Fireplace fully sealed for dust containment. Negative-pressure vacuum captures everything we loosen.

03

Top-down rotary brushing

Motorized brush runs the visible flue. Creosote and debris fall into the sealed smoke shelf for capture.

04

Firebox, smoke shelf, damper cleaned

Firebox walls scraped, smoke shelf vacuumed, damper fully serviced and tested.

05

Level 1 visual inspection

Visible flue condition, damper operation, firebox integrity — all documented with photos.

06

Written report, same day

Photo-inclusive Level 1 inspection report texted and emailed the same afternoon.

Questions

What Bay Area homeowners ask us about chimneys.

How often should my chimney be swept?add

Annually if you burn regularly, every 2–3 years for occasional use, always on move-in regardless of the previous owner's claims, and any time you've had smoke in the house that wasn't supposed to be there.

Do I need a sweep if I only use my fireplace once or twice a year?add

Probably less urgently, but the inspection is more important than the sweep for low-use homes. Cracked flue tiles, animal nests, and cap damage don't care how often you burn. Every 3 years is usually sufficient for light use — scope every time.

Will the sweep make my living room sooty?add

No. We work top-down with the damper sealed and a HEPA vacuum running. Drop cloths go down before we start. Most clients can't tell we were there except for the smell of a clean fireplace afterward.

I have a gas fireplace — do I still need this?add

Gas fireplaces need a flue and cap inspection annually. No creosote sweep, but we check the liner, the damper, and the cap for blockage — bird nests and debris in gas fireplace flues cause carbon monoxide backup every winter.

What if the scope finds something wrong?add

You'll get photos, a written finding, and a no-pressure quote. We're never paid on commission to find repairs. If it can wait, we'll tell you it can wait. If it can't, we'll explain why and what the options look like — including getting a second opinion.

Do I need a Level-1 inspection on move-in?add

Yes. A Level 1 visual inspection is recommended any time a chimney changes hands, regardless of age or recent use. For unknown service history or a post-close first use, our Level 2 Camera Inspection + Sweep service is the standard move-in package — it gives you the baseline documentation your home insurance may later ask for.

"The camera scope found a cracked clay liner tile we'd been smoking past for who knows how long. Glad we found out this way and not the other way."

"Tech showed up in a clean uniform, put drop cloths down, did the sweep and scope in under 90 minutes, and left the hearth cleaner than when he arrived. Report landed in my inbox that night."

"Another quote was three times as much with a bunch of scare tactics. Cal Duct showed me on video what actually needed doing and what could wait. Honest company."
